First Paypal Spoof Ever

Today, my very first PayPal spoof/phishing mail arrived. So finally, my e-mail address has been recorded in your average cyberpunk database. Note, that the (Dutch) grammar and spelling in the e-mail is appalling. Just what you expect from a default translation program like Google Translate or Babelfish.

Morning Walk

A couple of (highly annoyed) cows I ran into this morning during a nice morning walk. Fog and sun... a nice combination.

Changing Camera Systems?

Updated on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 14:24 by Registered CommenterWillem

Don't know how it happened, but last night I stumbled upon several dSLR (Nikon/Canon) versus Rangefinder (Leica) comparisons. Something, I wish hadn't happen. Reading through these reviews / comparisons / user experiences made the (digital) rangefinder concept very appealing. Especially when you're a non-studio / non-portrait / non-macro / non-action shooter..... which fits my profile for about 95%.

Beth Hart Showcase @ Amstelkerk, Amsterdam

Autographed CDMy gf won two tickets for the showcase for Beth Hart's new CD 'My California' for last Friday. I didn't quite know what to expect. I did know some of her older songs, and that's about it.

Since it was a showcase for her new CD, she didn't play much 'oldies'. Not that I cared, since her new album contains more than enough excellent material.

Below, one of her new songs 'Sister Heroine'.

Recorded with a Panasonic Lumix LX3

More photos from the showcase are available on my flickr page.

My iPhone 3GS and iOS 4

Apple released the latest Operating System/software/firmware for the iPhone. This new OS (iOS) adds several new features and lots of enhancements (which I wont be going into).

I upgraded my iPhone earlier this week. No problems with that. The only real hick-up I ran into was the Voicemail number. The phone had forgotten the Voicemail, MMS and Tethering settings, so I needed to add it again. Even tethering was still available on the SIM-lock free iPhone with the KPN carrier.

There's one thing that's not 'Apple' about this update. With the regular Apple operating systems there's always the experience that an upgrade to a new release (10.4 -> 10.5 -> 10.6) leaves you with a faster/snappier OS. Even if the hardware is relatively old. Don't know how they do it, but it's something that Microsoft hasn't accomplished yet since MS-DOS 3.

Anyway, the OS upgrade on the iPhone is completely different. The device is less snappy. It looks like the device goes into some sort of suspended animation and when you need to use it it takes a couple of milliseconds (it's not much, but it's noticeable) for the phone to react. After a couple of seconds it seems to be gone.

For me, the new/improved features are more important than the snappy-ness of the device, so I'll stick to the new iOS for the moment.

Getting a New Camera Bag

I intend to do some travelling the next couple of weeks, and for that I need a bigger/safer (more ergonomic) shoulder bag for my camera gear. Since I travel to some areas where people roam the streets that are extremely interested in what you carry around, I need a inconspicuous bag.

Domke F-5XZFirst inline was the Domke F-5XZ WaxWear bag. About the right size and according to the website convenient zippers to protect your gear from certain fingers.

When I received the bag (ordered it online) it turned out that there were no zippers, and also no convenient 'bottom zippered flap which allows easy access'. Two things that made me decide to get the bag weren't there. So I decided to sent that bag back.
I tried to get the non-WaxWear version of the bag (which has the zippers), but that one wasn't available (anymore). So, off to start looking at other brands.

First Contact With Adobe Photoshop CS5

As most of you will know, Adobe release its latest Creative Suite (CS5) a couple of days ago. Personally, I only use Photoshop and Dreamweaver. For the casual photographer, the CS2 or CS3 version of Photoshop is probably more than you ever need. So are there reasons for upgrading (or reinstalling)?

First, Adobe doesn't really support the older versions of Photoshop anymore, or the operating system you run at this moment has some issues with an older version. So an upgrade will happen sooner or later. But apart from compatibility issues with the OS, there are some new features available for the (casual) photographer. The following features are the ones I'm most interested in;

  • Easier ways of doing complex selections
Basically a tedious job in every earlier version, so I have my reservations on this feature.
  • Content Aware Fill
    Create-photos-in-Photoshop-instead-of-by-using-a-camera feature.
  • HDR Imaging
Let's see if it beats Photomatix Pro.
  • Automatic Lens Correction
I now use PTLens on the photos that need the correction.
  • 64bit support (!!!!)
    A feature that's long overdue.
  • Better Black and White conversion
I mostly use Nik Silver Efex Pro at the moment.

In this post I'll be evaluating Photoshop CS5 on some of the points I mentioned above. Others will become a separate blogpost later on. For the moment, I'll be starting with 'upgrading' from CS4 to CS5, and see if that goes well (after I've cloned my MacBook disk with SuperDuper! to make sure I can always go back if things go sour).

Another thing that I need to check out is compatibility with earlier versions of Action scripts, and (older) plugins. Just check the CS5 or Photoshop tag for all the related posts about Photoshop CS5.

Installing & Configuring CentOS 5.4 (Day 2)

Oké. Day 2. After the successful installation and configuration of CentOS with Adobe Coldfusion, I needed to install MySQL as a database. So, I started the virtual machine, and found out why Linux will (probably) never cut it as a common desktop environment.

X11 - No DesktopYesterday I (properly) shutdown the system (which had the GNOME Desktop), and today it started with some back to the 60's desktop. Every icon gone. All that I'm left with was a terminal window, clock, and a FireFox window. This environment is the basic X11 desktop.

Books on the White Screen

Inspiration for creating (blockbuster) movies can be found in books. There are hundreds of books which have been turned into movies. Some successful, others not so successful. There's no real formula to determine if a movie is gonna be successful or not. Having the right producer(s), director, a large budget, and a star cast doesn't guarantee a good movie (with lots of money)..... but it might help.
