Lousy Adobe Reader 10.0.1 Update

Earlier this week I got the announcement (I opened an Adobe application) that there was an update for the Adobe Reader app. Security-conscious as I am, I fired up the update process.

Each time, this process stopped at the (near??) end of the installation with the following error:

The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.adobe.ARM error 1807.)

The error also suggested looking at the log file. Examination of this file showed nothing out of the ordinary. At least not that made sense to me.
There were some lines in the log that made me try to do a work-around (in bold);

Apple Released OS X Update 10.6.3

Apple released the .3 update to Snow Leopard (10.6) today. You can find this update under the Software Update menu, or on the Apple website as a single (combo) download [.dmg].

The update was ~450MB, and took about ten minutes to install. After the reboot everything seemed to work fine. Some applications (I guess the ones that got updated) reverted back to their default settings. E.g. Firefox wasn't my default browser anymore, but NetNewsWire was still my default RSS reader.

I also thought that QuickTime X (how I dislike that app....) reverted back to its default settings, since my pr0n..... euh movies started opening in different windows. Since I can't find a Terminal command for this on the Internet, I guess that I'm mistaken on that. I might be confusing the excellent QuickTime Pro v7.x with this piece of whatever.
There are no visible enhancements on QuickTime X

An annoyance that got fixed is the deletion on SMB shares (Windows 2003 Server). Without the update, the files got deleted, but the directory they were in stayed behind. When you tried to remove this directory, you got this fancy error code.

The important pieces of software that functioned properly after the update uncluded:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4
  • Adobe Lightroom v2.6
  • BBEdit v9.2.1

Anyway, (more) updates will follow when I run into unexpected behavior.

iPhone Firmware Update 3.1.3

Apple released an update for the iPhone. Release 3.1.3 fixes some issues like;

  • improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
  • resolves issue where 3rd party apps would not launch in some instances
  • fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard
  • Tethering is back (even on the non exclusive carriers)....
    Results may vary since not every carrier allows tethering (like T-Mobile in the Netherlands).

Apple Releases Safari 4.0.2

Apple released Safari v4.0.2. Besides the regular security fixes they also fixed the bug which made Rabobank Internet Banking 'go haywire'. So I could in theory move from Firefox to Safari.... In theory I said :).

Updating Capture NX on Mac

When I bought my Nikon D300, I got a free copy op Capture NX (v1.3.0). After installing, the application reminded me to update. There were a couple of new versions available (current version is 1.3.3).
This is were the quest began......

The Nikon Update application kept crashing on me. 50MB downloads took over three hours (before crashing), while a single download from the support pages would take 5 to 10 minutes. So I needed to get the files from the web instead of using the updater.

First, the D300 was bought in the Netherlands, so you might think that the software would also be the Dutch version. I wouldn't know this because I install everything in English (if there's a choice). So I downloaded the Dutch updates from the Nikon support pages.

Note: I used the 'Dutch' CD which came with the camera.

None of the updates worked (Error: No version of Capture NX was found)....

I literally downloaded 12 different versions from different continents. Finally, I found a 1.3.1 update (a file called cnx131_en.dmg) which worked. So I needed to get English versions of the software. Not US, or Canadian versions, but English versions.

After this it was easy; Created an account on the UK Nikon support website and found Nikon Capture NX v1.3.3 for OSX. This update worked. So finally, after a gazillion downloads, multiple crashes, and 5 hours well spend, I got Capture NX v1.3.3 up and running.....

Nikon Capture NX v1.3.3

So, even if your camera is officially purchased in the Netherlands, you need to get the updates from the UK.

UPDATE: It seems that I'm not the only one who ran into this. I keep getting referers from some fora around the Internet.
I think that if you're running Windows instead of OSX you might have similar problems. So yet another crossplatform solution :)
