Another Possible P&S Candidate

Recently I blogged about wanting a (new) Point&Shoot camera. Back then, I optioned the Canon G9 and the Panasonic Lumix LX3. But in the mean time another candidate roared its head; The Leica D-LUX 3 (in black).

Choices, choices, choises... When will it end?

Forget about the D-lux 3. D-lux 3 is just a rebranded Lumix LX2. (Panasonic and Leica developed the LX1 and LX2 together.) Now that the Lumix LX3 is out, there's a 90% chance that Leica will unveil a D-lux 4 in the next couple of weeks. (There are already reports that the D-lux 3 is being withdrawn from stores.) The difference between the LX3 and the D-lux 4 will likely be minimal except that the D-lux 4 will cost a lot more.

I understood that the camera itself is identical to it's Lumix counterpart, but that the software/firmware is a lot better. Also, I saw some sample images showing the differences, the Leica was better looking.
Since it's basically a P&S camera, I don't want to be bothered with opening Photoshop etc.

B.t.w. I won't buy anything till the end of photokina this year.

I think that saying the software/firmware is a "lot" better is pretty optimistic. As an LX2 owner who has done a lot of reading on the topic, I think it is more accurate to say the software/firmware of the D-lux 3 is "slightly" better, and even that's a stretch for most people. It's really just a matter of the saturation and noise reduction being tweaked slightly differently (emphasis on "slightly").

Seriously, if you like the D-Lux 3 you should hang on, because the D-lux 4 is just around the corner. By the time Photokina is over you probably won't even be able to find a D-lux 3!

I will definitely wait till after Photokina 2008. And a possible D-LUX 4 might introduce a price drop on the D-LUX 3 they have in stock.
We'll wait and see :-)
